There have been many past and present

They call me militant atheist
for I go by fact and proof
not led by superstitious ways
from trickery stand aloof

As truth emerges daily
that religions can’t refute
their stories changing shamelessly
to endorse their fake pursuit

I pass each day in friendliness
pausing regularly for thought
saluting sound opinion
violent quests are never sought

I don’t belong to 'Atheist Club'
no wish to congregate
I do not hate the holy Joe
I merely twitter in debate

Quoted from: Jim al-Khalili
‘Like so many people who are not religious, I have often felt offended by the misguided notion that people require a religious faith to provide their moral compass in order to lead a good life. Reason, decency, tolerance, empathy and hope are human traits that we should aspire to, not because we seek reward of eternal life or because we fear the punishment of a supernatural being, but because they define our humanity. Only in recent years have I come to appreciate that all those qualities I have tried to espouse are precisely what defines Humanism.

Jim al-Khalili has been announced as the new president of the British Humanist Association. He will succeed Polly Toynbee on 1 January 2013 and hold the post for three years.
