The Peaceful Sceptic

Some people point the finger
that I'm a Godless malcontent
a person without principle
to keep away from circumvent

Primarily a humanist
who really cares about our earth
with a sense of obligation

accountability and worth

I’ll stand up and be counted
in defence of right and good
I’ll sing out for the underdog

beyond faith or nationhood

I do these things because I should
not to self-serve or gain grace
nor to curry favour win awards
or seek a fawning pride of place

Be happy do something nice for somebody
Quite often on Twitter somone will post a vile message using spite and foul phrases. I find that strange as they do this without personal knowledge of the receiver. Moreover they plead defence of their righteous loving God and religion. They seem to suppose that they are doing right by their belief. I say being is nice is better than being pompously self-important.

When Dreams Become Nightmares

Over twenty one million people

in the so called land of the free
denied their civil right to vote
for unsatisfactory ID

If you’re old black both and poor
a southern student studying hard
a vote will be denied to you
without a suitable ID card

Not any old card with a photo
to be accepted much more specific
to drive a car and carry a gun
underlines your rights ‘Terrific!’

Felix the AstroCat

Felix Baumgartner
alone with no partner
Travelled to the top of the world
Whilst making corrections
 plummeted down
Without panic
or parachute unfurled
Admitting his fear
giving up very near
With daring he overtook sound
He may now bask in praise
for the rest of his days
Though we expect
he may further astound
This amazing endeavour
of descent from a can
A most challenging
fabulous ring-pull
Completing the dare
of free-fall and flair
Toasting Felix Baumgartner
with Red Bull

Southern Solstice

21st December 2012

In those final days of pages turned
tying threads that close the year
taking heart from moonshine brew
midwinter flames bring cheer

Moving slowly from reflection
to a glowing new year’s day
when the ache of fresh direction
is the price that all must pay

No end in sight

NASA Video will enlighten you
A film from NASA about the Mayan prophecy that the world will end on 21 December has been released 10 days early. The Mayan calendar's 5,125-year run is due to end in 10 days, but the film – entitled The World Didn't End Yesterday – argues that the calendar should be interpreted as cyclical

Malala Yousufzai Light of Hope

Malala Yousufzai We hear you
your message crystal clear
We sing your song and feel your pain

at fourteen years you gave them fear

The stilted minds of penury
have shown their loathly spite
their bankrupt cause of misery
may well evaporate their might

Children are the hope of man

to deny their place is theft
thieving bands of nowhere cause
leaves them sullied and bereft
