What Went Before

Looking back on Ancestry
Showing up in history
Where we were
When we were
Through veils of shaded mystery

Very few were known to be
Yet now appear in memory
In record books
With dated hooks
Through veils of shaded mystery

Without them, I could never be
Not any form or shade of me
But here I am
And there they were
Through veils of shaded mystery

On the fringes of their borderline
A crazy quilt embroidery
Telling stories
Rarely told
Through veils of shaded mystery

Their lives in words comparably
At rest in time elusively
Sharing now
With them somehow
Through veils of shaded mystery
